Tell Smithfield No More Gestation Crates
This video was VERY hard for me to watch. But I believe in not turning a blind eye to what I wish didn't exist. I believe that by focusing a spotlight on abuse, I am honoring the abused in the best possible way.

People need to feel outrage for the injustice in this world. People need to face the abusers and make them accountable. In whatever ways we can, we need to do our part to right the wrongs and end the tragic treatment of animals and humans on this planet. Signing petitions is one way to voice your opposition to the inhumanity in this world. I have to believe signing petitions is a step -- albeit small step -- in the right direction. I'm utterly appalled by the treatment of pigs at Smithfield Foods. How did we let this happen??? And the idea that it's going to take YEARS to end it is an abomination.

DIRECTLY FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY:

An HSUS undercover investigator recently documented the suffering endured by female breeding pigs held in severely restrictive gestation crates on a factory farm operated by a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, in Waverly, Virginia. Gestation crates are exceptionally cruel and have been banned by the European Union, New Zealand and seven U.S. states. In 2007, Smithfield said it would phase out the use of gestation crates by 2017, yet in 2009 it said it could no longer meet its self-imposed and very lenient deadline.

Many of these highly intelligent and inquisitive pigs develop pressure sores and infections from crate-related injuries and from simply lying in the same position without relief. Out of sheer boredom, they engage in repetitive behaviors — such as bar biting and head swaying — sometimes injuring themselves in the process.

TAKE ACTION
Please send C. Larry Pope, CEO of Smithfield, a message urging him to recommit to the company's original promise and stop the use of these inhumane gestation crates on Smithfield's factory farms by 2017. SIGN THE PETITION

I will gladly send the letter pre-written by the Humane Society to Smithfield's Factory Farms, but why wait until 2017 to stop the suffering and abuse of these creatures? Can you explain this? Why is it being aloud one more second?

I know exactly what you mean!! Why are they waiting until 2017 to stop the suffering?? It's crazy. It's also about the money. That's why they're waiting, in my opinion. But you are so right to ask. I thought the same thing. I was horrified at the thought of waiting one second longer!

I emailed the Humane Society to see if they know why. I am sure it is related to Smithfield's original agreement. At this point, government needs to step in and outlaw this immediately. We will all be held accountable for how we treat the animals. Being put in dominion over animals doesn't mean manipulation of these creatures for man's gain. Let me know what you hear from the HS. I just figure it takes a lot of money for them to change a system such as gestation crates. I appreciate you dropping by and taking time to write down your thoughts. Thanks for taking action. It all adds up.

I heard back from the Humane Society and they said they are trying to uphold Smithfield to their original self-imposed deadline to cease gestation crates by 2017 on which they are now trying to extend even further. They also mentioned that they, the Humane Society, are leading the ban of gestation crates across the country and has succeeded in seven states so far! That's progress! Let's hope Smithfield will feel the pressure and understand the urgency of ceasing this cruel treatment of pigs even before 2017. Let's also hope they change their business viewpoint from mass pork production to humanely stewarding animals.

Glad to hear it, Trish! I'd like to know how Smithfield would respond to why they are taking YEARS to faze out gestation crates when they seemingly agree to the fact that they are inhumane.
