Ambassador Jasper and his team of animal activists give high praise to the Asociación Humanitaria Para la Proteccion Animal de Costa Rica (AHPPA), which has altered the landscape of animal protection in Costa Rica.  Images are sold as a collage or separately The shelter's efforts do not stop at rescuing animals; they also aim to change Costa Rica's cultural view of animals. Jasper says this is what's imperative around the world.
Jasper reads from their website: "People used to see animals as their property, like a chair, car, closet. They did not have much feelings for them, thinking that the animals also had no feelings," says Lilian Schnog, AHPPA President. When animals had served their purpose and no longer had a function as a guard dog, or a mouser or whatever their owners needed, they were simply discarded. Some were literally thrown out on the street. With females not spayed, the population grew and grew. THINGS ARE CHANGING From their website: Thanks in part to the AHPPA, the attitude towards animals is gradually changing. Not only does the shelter rescue homeless, abused, and abandoned animals, but its advanced veterinary clinic is one of a kind in Costa Rica. It provides spay/neuter and other services at low or no cost for residents, while absorbing the fees when sterilizing strays. The clinic sterilizes 12,000 animals a year and treats another 6,000 for injuries. The AHPPA is open to all animals, including cows, goats, toucans, armadillos and parrots. New Law Requires Health History of Dogs, Cats Before Sale | 2 Comments Flanked by Eddie Spaghetti and a dozen other furry, four-legged friends, Gov. Pat Quinn today signed a law aimed at protecting consumers before they buy a dog or cat that might come from a breeding mill. READ FULL ARTICLE In an interview with Jasper, Livehonestly reporter, B.Seeton asked Jasper about his reaction to the new law, "It's a step in the right direction," Jasper said, "... though I don't like the fact that the law is aimed at protecting the human consumer versus the victims -- the dogs and cats -- who are terribly abused by certain breeders. It was this rally where he was first inspired to get involved in animal welfare.

HEARTS UNITED FOR ANIMALS (HUA) is a national no-kill animal shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. They rescue dogs from all over the country and specialize in long distance adoptions. They take creatures who are lost, afraid, hungry or ill and comfort them, give them a warm, soft bed, good food, medical care and most of all, love. The Puppy Mill documentary explores the domestication of dogs and how our demand for the ultimate family pet has led to increasingly inhumane treatment. According to the Humane Society, " In most states, a breeding kennel can legally keep dozens, even hundreds, of dogs in cages for their entire lives, as long as the dogs are given the basics of food, water, and shelter." This is outrageous people! This should be illegal and perpetrators of the law should be punished with mandatory jail time. The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) that congress passed in 1966 outlines a bare minimum of standard care for cats and dogs and certain breeds of other animals sold commerically. One big loophole is that dogs sold through puppy mills over the Internet or directly to the public are not federally regulated at all. The Humane Society reports that "only large-scale commercial facilities that breed or broker animals for resale—to pet stores for example—are required to be licensed and inspected by the USDA because they are considered "wholesale" operations. Those that sell directly to the public—thousands of facilities that breed and sell just as many puppies as their wholesale counterparts—are not required to adhere to the Animal Welfare Act or to any federal humane care standards." MORE INFORMATION WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW Don't buy puppies from pet stores unless you know first hand the source of the puppies. Visit your local animal shelters instead or personally know your breeder and the dogs' living conditions. Bear in mind, there are so many homeless dogs out there who long to be loved.
