Right after I posted a blog about Disabledanimal.com, I saw where the founder said her website got so many hits in the beginning that it crashed. The founder of HandicappedPets.com, Mark Robinson, came to the rescue and offered to host her site for free. I love to see that kind of cooperation between great organizations and people. What goes around, comes around. Below are links to Mark's website. What a heart warming business. Mark Robinson About HandicappedPets.com: (Straight from their website.) HandicappedPets.com was created in 2001 to support the caretakers of elderly, injured, and handicapped pets. We have all of the products, services, and support you'll need. The site was created by Mark C. Robinson in memory of Mercedes, a slightly epileptic Keeshond who was put to sleep before her time because Mark didn't know any better and had no way to find out more. Now there's a way. Our Mission:
The mission of HandicappedPets.com is to provide products, services and support so that elderly, handicapped, and injured pets can lead happy, healthy, high-quality lives. A Letter from HandicappedPets.com Founder: To All Pet Lovers and Caretakers, There was a day when injured pets were "no good anymore." When an animal was hurt, became lame or incontinent, or was for any reason no longer wanted, they were put down. Not Anymore. We are becoming more aware of the sacredness of all life. We are beginning to understand the power of the loving bond that is created when one living thing cares for another. Our pets have become family members and deserve to be loved, respected, and cherished. The purpose and mission of HandicappedPets.com is to help people learn that there are alternatives to euthanasia. An elderly, disabled, or injured pet can often live a high quality life for many years if they get the little help that they need; diapers, a rear-support leash, or a wheelchair. I created the site in the memory of a Keeshond, Mercedes. She was put to sleep at a vet's advice after being diagnosed with a mild form of canine epilepsy. Years later, a dear friend, was diagnosed with a mild form of epilepsy for which she takes a pill now and then to completely eliminate all symptoms. The disparity between the two reactions to the same disease was unacceptable. I created the site to give caretakers the information they need to make the difficult, loving decisions that face them. The site is filled with stories of hope and healing as well as the products, services, and support that a caretaker of a handicapped pet needs. People submit their inventions and devices which can be distributed through the site. The discussion area contains over 70,000 messages from people helping one another. The gallery has photos and stories submitted by caretakers. Listings of caring vets, animal rehabilitation centers, holistic healers, and animal communicators, and more are all available. Particularly touching to me is the 4th grade teacher, Kathy Barton, in Velma Oklahoma who introduces her class each year to her handicapped pets and raises money to buy wheelchairs for dogs that they find on the site. Not only are these children learning about compassion for animals, but also about compassion for all life. The most common reaction we get from people when they hear about the site is "If only I had known about you before I put my dog to sleep..." We need to reach people. We need to tell them that there are alternatives. Best Regards, Mark C. Robinson

What a great idea! Check this out. A great way to help animals in need. .
I used to live in Temecula, California so this story caught my eye. It's just a feel good read. Enjoy. 10:00 PM PST on Sunday, February 6, 2011 By McLEAN Barbara Inlandsocal.Com/Pets It's often said that a little kindness goes a long way and that's certainly a perspective that Imogene Barry, of Wildomar, has thanks to the efforts of a Temecula couple who began collecting pet food for people in need. Like many senior citizens 86-year-old Barry, a widow for 21 years, has found making ends meet in the current economy tough and giving up her German shepherd, Lady Jane, was not an option. Last November Temecula couple Jan Baron and Barry Ebling began collecting pet food as part of Pets of the Homeless, a nonprofit organization based in Nevada. They solicited businesses to be donation sites and also distributed door hangers "There have been so many pets turned in due to foreclosure," said Ebling, "An older dog or cat, especially if they have a physical problem, don't stand a chance at a shelter." They hope that providing pet food will help people keep their pets. Each week Barry and Lady Jane hop in the car for the drive to the Senior Citizens Service Center on Eastman Drive in Murrieta where they pick up food for them both. "This has been very helpful to us," said Jan Hannan, board secretary, "We were finding that many of the seniors were sharing their own food with their pets just so they could keep them." Thanks to the efforts of a Temecula couple, Imogene Barry and her dog, Lady Jane, can get pet food at the Senior Citizens Service Center in Murrieta.Hannan said about one out of four people who take advantage of the food program receive pet food and the number is growing as the word gets out. The center also serves as a collection point for pet and people food as well as a distribution center to seniors, low-income and the homeless. Ebling and Baron also work with CAYA Homeless Ministries in Riverside to provide food for homeless people with pets and each Friday the owners of Moreno Valley Plumbing provide a hot dog lunch for homeless folks and they are also able to pick up pet food that has been collected by the couple. CALL IT MURDER MOST FOUL (straight from http://www.nydailynews.com) OR MAYBE IT'S JUST KARMA2/8/2011 A California man attending a cockfight was stabbed to death by a bird that had a knife attached to its own limb. Cockfighting bird stabs California man, Jose Luis Ochoa, to death: policeBY ALIYAH SHAHID
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Tuesday, February 8th 2011, 8:22 AM Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, died about two hours after he was injured in neighboring Tulare County on Jan. 30, according to the Kern County coroner. "I have never seen this type of incident," Sgt. Martin King, a 24-year vet of the sheriff's department, told the Bakersfield Californian. Ochoa died of accidental "sharp force injury" to his right calf, according to the autopsy. Onlookers fled when cops arrived at the scene of the fight, King told the local newspaper. Authorities, acting on an anonymous tip, found five dead roosters and other evidence of cockfighting at the location. No arrests were made at the fight. Cockfighting is an illegal sport in the U.S. Metal spurs are often placed on the specially bred birds' legs and they are encouraged to fight until one is incapacitated or killed. ORIGINAL POSTING GO HERE “To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; to do that we must first set our hearts right.” ~~ Confucius Chained for hours and hours 7 days a week - by Betsy Seeton by Betsy Seeton It is this very concept about which Confucius wrote that is at the core – at the heart - of my brand of activism. I believe, as Confucius implied, it is the individual hearts of humankind that must change to bring change. The human heart must embrace a broader and deeper compassion for all life. Old ways of thinking and “of being” need to change and evolve. The inhumane treatment and living conditions of hundreds of thousands of animals on farms, in zoos, with circus performing animals, roadside attractions, animal breeders, along with the brutal deaths of animals to fill the demand for animal organs, fur, body parts, ivory, horns and even blood (medicinal and ritual uses) must first be recognized as abuse, and as inhumane, before it can change, and before it will ever end. A paradigm shift in the animal and human relationship is essential. A new breed of human must emerge out of the greater understanding that indisputably exists about how animals truly "feel" and how they experience a wide range of emotions and pain. Their experiences are as important to them as ours are to us. Their wants in life are much the same as ours. They want food, shelter, good health and happiness. They don't want to be hit, hurt, injured, used and abused. But without an immediate paradigm shift in the way humans regard them, animals needlessly and shamefully suffer unimaginably egregious pain at the hands of their human handlers and guardians. Human ignorance and greed must begin to spur outrage and ultimately be wholly unacceptable by the masses. I support well designed (and competently enforced) legislation that insures humane treatment of animals, as well as laws that guarantee rights to animals, but what also must coexist with these laws and regulations are human souls with hearts that will demand humanity and justice for animals. The hearts of people must be strong enough and loud enough to speak for the voiceless; to not silently stand by when animals are being abused, neglected and denied basic rights. No more turning a blind eye. SUMMARY The vast number of animals suffering on this planet due to outdated notions, ignorance and greed must, as Jane Goodall says, be overcome. It must not be tolerated. It is no myth that animals feel deeply. It’s also not anthropomorphism. It’s real. Humans must rethink their treatment of animals and revamp their entire view of what is in the best interest of animals if we ever hope to restore the animal kingdom to its optimal and rightful place on this planet that we all share. "We need a boundless ethic that includes animals, too."
~ Albert Schweitzer Fighting Poachers in Africa - photographer unknown Jasper heard from one his anti-poaching commandos today who recently finished his highly specialized training to defend Africa's rhinos against the deadly, criminal syndicates. The increase in rhino poaching is a trend that is making poaching reach a 15-year high on the continent. Poachers are becoming organized and employing high tech methods like night vision goggles, rifles with silencers and even helicopters. These sophisticated criminal syndicates "threaten to roll back more than three decades of conservation work that brought the species back from the brink of extinction," writes Jerome Taylor of The Independent. The World Wildlife Foundation reports show that rhino kills in South Africa totaled 333 during 2010, an increase of 173 percent over 2009. "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." ~Alice Walker The source of the quote is Walker's preface to Marjorie Spiegel's 1988 book, "The Dreaded Comparison" . Her next sentence was, "This is the gist of Ms. Spiegel's cogent, humane and astute argument, and it is sound." Archives
