Repost from 2012 LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS HISTORY & ACCOMPLISHMENTS Since its formation in 1984, Last Chance for Animals (LCA) has succeeded as one of the nation’s pioneer animal advocacy organizations. LCA’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has worked with prosecutors nationwide to put animal abusers behind bars. LCA’s educational and public outreach programs have empowered the public to make positive changes for the animals in their own communities. 1988: To end the accusation that animal rights groups fabricate stories about animal research laboratories, LCA took a camera crew into UCLA's Brain Research Institute, where cats were being used as research subjects. The horror of animal research was exposed on the national television show 48 Hours and on CNN, turning the tide in media and public perception of vivisection. CLICK HERE TO READ THE TIMELINE OF SUCCESSES THROUGH 2011 STRAIGHT FROM DEALINGDOG'S WEBSITE: For nearly three decades, Chris DeRose has been an international leader in the animal rights movement, and an inspiration and consultant to countless other individuals and groups dedicated to the animal cause. In 1984, he founded Last Chance for Animals (LCA), a national, nonprofit animal advocacy organization focused on investigating, exposing, and ending animal exploitation. Chris had a promising future as an actor, a profession he eventually turned his back on; instead he chose to devote 100% of his time to saving animals and educating people about animal abuse. For ten years, using the power of the media, he worked as a reporter and special correspondent for TV’s Hard Copy. By the time Hard Copy left the air in 1999, Chris had contributed to more than 150 animal stories on the show that reached millions of people. READ MORE FROM DEALINGDOG'S WEBSITE: "In 1997, Chris released his autobiography, In Your Face, reporting on his life and his values on compassion. The book was the final achievement that earned him the prestigious Courage of Conscience International Peace Award – an honor he shares with previous award winners Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr." LAST CHANCE FOR ANIMALS MISSION STATEMENT Last Chance for Animals (LCA), a national animal rights organization based in Los Angeles, has been active for almost three decades. Founded and led by animal expert, author, and actor, Chris DeRose, LCA's roots began in exposing the inherent cruelty of vivisection.

" We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates in killing we set back the progress of humanity." -- Rachel Carson "I was so moved by the intelligence, sense of fun and personalities of the animals I worked with on (the movie) Babe that by the end of the film I was a vegetarian." ~ James Cromwell "The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men." -- Leonardo Da Vinci "The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality." ~~ Arthur Schopenhauer, German Philosopher A Petition to the United States Congress
I, the undersigned American citizen, believe that animals, like all sentient beings, are entitled to basic legal rights in our society. Deprived of legal protection, animals are defenseless against exploitation and abuse by humans. As no such rights now exist, I urge you to pass legislation in support of the following basic rights for animals: The Right of animals to be free from exploitation, cruelty, neglect, and abuse. The Right of laboratory animals not to be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments. The Right of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs. The Right of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. The Right of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically sufficient to a normal existence and self-sustaining species population. The Right of animals to have their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land. I couldn't watch the whole thing. It's simply too violent and it hits me in the gut on a cellular level. But we cannot turn a blind eye to this needless suffering of these beautiful creatures all for the purpose of putting their fur coats on the backs of people. This is inhumane on a grave level. I hope that the human race wakes up to the savage treatment of animals that goes on around the globe every single day. It is not just the suppliers who have blood on their hands. Every single buyer of fur, ivory, rhino horns, tiger parts, and the list goes on and on, are every bit as bloody as the ones who kill. As long as there are humans wanting to buy, there will be humans will to supply, and animals continue to die. (This is a repost from 2010 with a 2014 updated video.) Non profit organizations like WSPA and Born Free are doing a good job to educate the public on the horrendous practices in the fur trade. If you read any of the 50 page report (download a free pdf on their site) by Born Free that discloses what goes on behind fur farming, complete with stomach turning images, you have to wonder how this isn't front page news and how people aren't uprising against such cruel practices. Please don't turn a blind eye to this stuff! It's only people who can make change and help the helpless. Speak for these millions of animals living tortured lives. It's going on here in the United States of America. These animals live in brutal circumstances and die painfully. It's another outrageous example of the great inhumanity of humans believing that animals are here on earth to serve their selfish interests. Cruelty Uncaged: Fur Farming in North America Globally, most fur used in fashion comes from animals raised on fur farms where they are forced to live in cramped confined conditions that fail to accommodate their natural behavior. Death provides their only release and is often precipitated by extreme fear, stress, illness, and pain. The United States is the fifth largest mink producing country in the world. In terms of animal lives this amounts to approximately 3 million farm-raised mink killed annually for their pelts. Additionally, approximately 660,000 breeding female mink are held on U.S. fur farms. Reliable data on the total number of farmed fox, and farmed bobcat or lynx, raised or pelted in the U.S. are not available. The fur industry and its apologists want us to believe that fur farming is a humane, environmentally friendly and highly regulated industry. But as Born Free USA's report Cruelty Uncaged: A Review of Fur Farming in North America reveals, nothing could be farther from the truth. READ FULL ARTICLE. Wolf reading: (posted in 2011) STOP THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT FROM SLAUGHTERING WOLVES! -Target: Canada’s Minister of Environment TAKE ACTION PLEASE! - SIGN & SHARE http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-the-canadian-government-from-slaughtering-wolves.html In response to the fact that tar sands oil mining is THREATENING caribou herds by DESTROYING their habitat in Alberta, the Canadian government has called for strychnine POISONING and AERIAL SHOOTING of THOUSANDS of wolves in areas near tar sands mining. The "BIG BAD WOLF" in this struggle is NOT the furry kind; it’s the kind that WALKS ON TWO LEGS! The caribou’s habitat is being destroyed by mining. The Alberta Tar Sands has created a MASSIVE LOSS of habitat for all wildlife in the region, but perhaps the most profoundly affected has been the caribou. But instead of taking steps to PROTECT the caribou’s habitat, Canada’s Minister of Environment said that THOUSANDS of Alberta wolves will NEED to be killed to rescue caribou impacted by tar sands development. Killing the wolves means SHOOTING them from HELICOPTERS and POISONING them with BAITS laced with strychnine. Strychnine is a DEADLY poison that causes a PAINFUL progression from MUSCLE SPASMS to convulsions to suffocation over a period of hours. It is an excruciating death!! The poisoned baits will also pose a threat for NON-TARGETED animals like cougars and wolverines that may eat them. Canada’s FIRST PRIORITY should be PROTECTION of the habitat, NOT additional assaults on the native wildlife! OTHER LINKS & PETITIONS Please read these petitions and help the wolves with your signature.
"As you read this, millions of animals are suffering so that the clothing industry may sell coats, boots and other garments made from their fur. Some of the worst cruelty occurs on rabbit farms in Catalonia, Spain — and their furs wind up at major retailers across the United States. Investigators went undercover, and found that rabbits on these farms live their entire lives in misery, confined to small cages with hard wires for floors. Investigators taped conversations with distributors who sell fur from these very farms, and eight major designers were named as clients: Burberry, Dior, Armani, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Fursten-berg. We’re working to stop the savageness, but we need your help to do it. Please donate to help us stop the cruelty." "Trapping and Fur Trade: Cruel and UnnecessaryEach year, millions of furbearing animals are killed under the auspices of "nuisance wildlife control" and millions more are killed in the name of fashion.
Indiscriminate body-crushing traps are used to capture or kill furbearing animals who are deemed a "nuisance" or who are valued only for the fur on their backs. Once an animal is caught she may remain in the trap for several days before starving or dying from exposure. Snares are a wire noose and can cause trapped animals to slowly strangle to death. With leghold traps, an animal my chew off his own paw to escape, only to die days later from the injury." From the BornFree USA website. "In the last 30 years, the African elephant population has declined to about 35 percent of its original numbers." Samuel Wasser Conservation Biologist, University of Washington Elephants are very emotional animals with the capacity to love deeply. When baby elephants are rescued after losing their mothers to poaching, they wail in grief and exhibit fear and great emotional pain. They can even die from the trauma. From Born Free:
Ivory's Curse: The Militarization and Professionalization of Poaching in Africa was released April 21, and its findings are truly alarming.

Most loving, devoted, dog owners treasure it when their furry family members are having fun. Today, a black lab wandered onto the farm and met my dog, Cooper, and my grandpuppy, Mila, the golden colored one. She's visiting us for awhile. The three of them had so much fun together. On this dreary, zillionth day of gray drabness, it lifted my spirits to know they were having such fun with a new friend. I don't know who the lab belongs to. Dogs sometimes visit the farm and then go on their way. This boy has no tags, but did not act like a stray at all. I'll keep an eye out for future visits and try to make sure he isn't lost. Last week an Australian sheep dog visited us. The three of them got along so well. It really makes my day! "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men." ~Alice Walker The source of the quote is Walker's preface to Marjorie Spiegel's 1988 book, "The Dreaded Comparison" . Her next sentence was, "This is the gist of Ms. Spiegel's cogent, humane and astute argument, and it is sound." Archives
